Meet Roland, my niece's sweet cat. He loves to play and cuddle but, next to eating, sleeping is one of his favorite things to do! He's called a "tuxedo cat" because of his black and white fur pattern. Don't you just love his soft white muzzle and paws, and his little pink nose?
He's sleeping on a beautiful quilt made by my sister. I absolutely love the vibrant colors in this quilt! If you look closely, you can see that there are hints of abstract cats scattered here and there throughout the quilt. I thought that added a suggestion of what Roland could be dreaming about (though perhaps little mice dreams are more likely!)
The black strips in this quilt, as well as Roland's black fur, add an especially nice compositional touch, providing a nice quiet counterbalance against the bright blocks of color. Most of the "black" I used for this painting was actually a mix of other colors. Some of it was a mix of a dark green and red, and some of it was a mix of a dark blue and rust. Then I added a touch of actual black here and there, where I really wanted to deepen the black color.
"Quilt Dreams" was invited to participate in the 2022 Northwest Watercolor Society Waterworks Unlimited Exhibition.
